I have been teaching guitar regularly for five years, and have played for over a decade. I have a professional background in education and advising, and currently reside in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
I started playing stringed instruments in 2009 when my mom bought me a 3/4 size bright pink, nylon-string guitar from Toys R' Us. I spent a lot of time with booklets from the local music store, but this really didn't engage me. I liked learning how to make chords rather than play my scales, so admittedly, I skipped through the book quite a bit.
My mom, seeing that I wasn't practicing a lot on my own except for the same few chords, decided to try to find me a guitar teacher a few months after I got my instrument. I was extremely excited to start learning how to play my favorite songs, but my guitar teacher did have to begin somewhere, and that was with those dreaded basics. I wasn't excited about this part, but looking back on it, I know that drilling those techniques really did make me a better, more disciplined musician. In early 2012 I started playing backup guitar in the worship band on stage, which really shaped my relationship to musical performance.
I have played several instruments throughout my life, including the marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, drum set, violin, trumpet, and bass. I have also enjoyed learning about music composition, music technology, and music theory! Even though I probably couldn't pick up a violin today and play as well as I did for my junior year concert, I still find value in having tried new things, which is the key to becoming a well-rounded musician.
Every skilled musician started out with the very basics. Let's get started! You never know what excitement it may bring.
